SIU ‘die-in’ protest

SIU students and faculty held a 'die-in' protest in front of Anthony Hall to protest the issues of gun violence in Carbondale and how SIU has responded to assist students with counseling services on campus. SIU vs. Youngstown State football game (Senior Day)

SIU Professor working to develop heat tolerant pumpkins

Piper Kerman Speaks at SIU

Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison author, Piper Kerman, made an appearance at Elmer H. Johnson Lecture Series at Shryock Auditorium. Kerman talked about her experience in the prison system and the ongoing issues with mass incarceration within the United States. Jacob Jurinek vigil

One of the eight initial victims of the Astroworld festival tragedy on Nov. 5 in Houston, was SIU student Jacob Jurinek. Students and members of the community gathered at Faner Plaza to grieve the loss of Jurinek as well as celebrate his memory. Drag Show Spooktacular sells out Varsity Center

Halloween weekend kicked off in Carbondale with the sold out Spooktacular Halloween drag show at The Varsity Center, where participates were welcomed to games, costume contests, and a variety of performances. SIU Medieval Combat Club in Full Swing

SIU Men’s Basketball defeats Henderson State in Exhibition Game

SIU basketball opened its doors to the general public after 608 day hiatus, where over 4,000 fans came out to get a first look at the 2021-2022 Saluki men’s basketball team during an exhibition game against Henderson State on Oct. 26th, 2021 at the Banterra Center. Homecoming 2021

On October 16th, Southern Illinois University of Carbondale celebrated its homecoming with different planned event like a parade, tail gate, football game, and dance. I was onsite photographing for the Daily Egyptian, click the link below to view the full gallery.

SIU vs. North Dakota football game (Homecoming)

SIU played North Dakota for the highly anticipated 2021 homecoming game at Salukis stadium, where the Salukis scored early in the game but ended up battling it out with the Fighting Hawks. After a failed last second field goal to send it into OT, SIU secured the 31-28 win sending the Salukis 4-0 in the MVC and 6-1 overall. Lost Cross 35th Anniversary Celebration.

Lost Cross, the oldest punk house venue in America, held its 35th anniversary celebration throughout the venues across the city of Carbondale. Together We Must Stop the Violence Rally

Keshanna “Shanna” Jackson vigil

A vigil was held for SIU freshman Keshanna Jackson, who was shoot and killed while attending a frat party early morning Sunday. In the evening, students and community members came out to the vigil, where friends and relatives celebrated the life of Keshanna. Decatur Gun Buyback Event

On the afternoon of April 2nd, the city of Decatur, Illinois held its first ever gun buyback event. More than 100 people gathered at the Community Church of God to return their rifles, pistols and old magazines in exchange for cash and no questions asked. SIU delivers scholarships to local high schools

SIU delivered in-person scholarships to high school senior recipients in the southern Illinois area. On May 3rd, interim director of admissions, Amanda Sutton, presented scholarships to twelve Marion high school seniors. The International Parade of Flags kicked off the start of SIU’s International Fest 2021, a week-long celebration of diversity, inclusiveness and culture at SIU and the greater Carbondale community. As spring approached, Brews Brothers Taproom hosted their 5th St. Patrick’s Day celebration with a dial back version of the celebration due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor went from prison to prestige through art

SIU student wins $125,000 in tuition in Dr. Pepper’s Tuition Giveaway

Marianne Haines, an SIU student who was selected as a finalist and eventually won the grand prize in the 2021 Dr. Pepper’s Tuition Giveaway. National Guard at Illinois State Capitol

Anna Trump Train

Trump supporters formed a gathering in Anna, IL and planned a county long parade. Black Lives Matter counter-protesters showed up to counter the points of Trump supporters. I was onsite photographing for the Daily Egyptian, click the link below to view the full gallery.

Pulaski County Detention Center protest

An ICE detention center located in Ullin, IL, was the subject of a multiple organizational protest to demand the better treatment and for detainees to receive proper health care. I was onsite photographing for the Daily Egyptian, click the link below to view the full gallery.

Doris Miller photo story

Doris Miller is an avid local Trump support, who sells Trump merchandise in her front yard at her house in Vienna. She takes the profits made from the sales and sends them to Donald Trump. Prayer vigil at the Pulaski County Dentition Center

Members of the Carbondale Interfaith Council held a prayer vigil in front the Pulaski County Dentition Center. The event was held to pray for the detainees, their families and for the center’s employees. Saluki Unity, a student-athlete led group, sponsored a Run/Walk event at SIU to bring awareness to social injustices and systematic racism in the United States and helped raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Illinois. March on Washington event

On August 28th, 2020, marked the 57th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s famous March on Washington protest where he would deliver his “I Have a Dream” speech. Million Unmasked March

A group of protesters rallied together to protest against Illinois State Board of Education’s guidelines requiring schools to mandate students to wear masks during school hours for the fall 2020 semester. Reopen Illinois Protest

A statewide protest was organized to take place in Chicago and Springfield to show their disapproval for Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s Shelter -in-Place order. Protesters demanded for the governor to lift the order, as it kept many businesses closed in order to prevent the rapid spread of COVID-19 in Illinois.
